Hardware Installation

Device Connection:

Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 adapter cable. (For more information, refer to  Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 Adapter Cable in the Appendix of the Hardware Installation section. The Gilson part number for the adapter cable is 360784192. The cable is not available from Dionex.)

 Tips:

Support is not available for controlling these Gilson autosamplers via the RS-232 interfaces on the PC (COM ports) or on the UCI Universal Chromatography Interface. Always connect the Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 adapter cable to a multi-serial 8-fold PCI interface card (8-RS-232 Multi-COM card, Dionex part no. 5906.2095) instead.

The Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 adapter cable is shipped with the baud rate set to 19200. To control the Gilson 231, 231A, and 232 Bio autosamplers by Chromeleon, set the baud rate to 9600. Open the connector housing and resolder the cable from pad A to pad B. (For more information, refer to the Gilson's 605 RS-232 Adapter and GSIOC Protocol - USER'S GUIDE.)

 Note:

Unlike the Gilson 231, 231A, and 232 Bio autosamplers, the Gilson 234 autosampler uses a baud rate of 19200. Therefore, do not modify the Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 adapter cable!

Device Settings:

No special settings required.

Software Installation

Install the Device Driver in the Chromeleon Server Configuration. (For more information about the program, refer to Software Installation and Communication  The Server Configuration Program.)

  1. Start the Chromeleon server.

  2. Start the Server Configuration program.

  3. Add the instrument to the timebase. Select Add Device on the Edit or context menu, and then select Gilson from the Manufacturers list box and 231 Autosampler (or 232 Bio Autosampler or 234 Autoinjector) from the Devices list box.

  4. The following settings are required:

On the General tab page, select a free COM port and enter the GSIOC address.

For the 231, 231A, and 232 Bio autosamplers:

On the respective rack tab page (= Rack for the 231 and 231A autosamplers or Rack for the 232 Bio autosampler), select the code number of the installed default rack. Select None of these to specify the maximum number of samples first. Manually enter the number in the INI File that is selected on the INI File tab page.

For the 234 autosampler:

On the Sampler tab page, enter the name of the installed tray file. The pull down box lists all tray files (maximum 9 characters) that are available in the Chromel\Bin directory. If the tray file is located in a different directory, enter the whole path. In addition, you can specify the syringe volume, the maximum syringe speed, and the loop volume. Select the syringe volume from the selection list. This action automatically sets the corresponding maximum syringe speed.

On the Relays tab page, deselect all relays that are not used.

On the Inputs tab page, remove all inputs that are not available.

The Error Levels tab page classifies the severity of any errors that occur. It is generally not necessary to change the default settings.

  1. To control the installed Gilson autosampler connect the GIL231.pan,GIL232.pan, or Gilson234.pan Control Panel in the Chromeleon client to the corresponding timebase.

Application

Before you can control these Autosamplers with Chromeleon, some information must be transferred to the instruments. As for other Gilson instruments, you have to download a basic (INI) file. Please follow the instructions in your Autosampler Manual. Include the name of the INI File in the device configuration (INI tab page) in the Chromeleon Server Configuration Program.

The following rack types are supported:

For these instruments, you can specify any other rack type, also. In this case, change the rack type manually in the INI File.

For an example INI File similar to a BASIC program, refer to Installing and Controlling Third-Party Devices  Gilson INI File.

In addition, the autosampler's GSIOC address must be entered in the Server Configuration (General tab page). The default address is 10. This value must correspond to the value set on the instrument.

Tray Files

Different standard tray files are already available. Install your rack in the autosampler so that the first sample is at the front left. If the corresponding Gilson program is available on your computer, you can freely program different sample arrangements by yourself. For available tray files, refer to  Gilson Autosampler and Fraction Collector: Tray Files.

Injection Modes

For information about the different injection modes, refer to Commands and Tips for Third-Party Devices  Gilson: Injection Modes in the User Help section.
