Installing and Controlling Thermo Scientific Devices
Thermo Scientific Accela Open Autosampler

Note:

Support of the Accela Open Autosampler is available starting with the SR11 Driver Update that provides extended Accela system support.

Device Type:

Autosampler

Device Driver:

Thermo Scientific: Accela Open Autosampler

Hardware Options
Supported:

  • Config 1: Standard Accela Open Autosampler with 3 drawer cooled stack

  • Config 2: Standard Accela Open Autosampler with 6 drawer cooled stack (only well plates)

  • Config 3: Accela Open Autosampler with more valves to be used with QuickQuan software (automated tune, calibration and analyzer system with TSQ)

  • Config 4: Equan Max System with 3 different syringes (100 µL, 1 mL, 5 mL). Injection volume max 20,000 µL

 Note:

The minimum required firmware version is 4.1.3. The Accela Open Autosampler was tested with firmware version 4.1.3 and 4.2.1.

Restrictions:

  • Sharing modules between timebases is not supported

  • Sample overlap is not supported

  • Programs must be created using the Program Wizard. Manual editing in the PGM Editor is restricted to a few commands.

  • Blank runs, i.e., where no injection takes place, are not possible

  • Demo mode is not supported.

  • Teaching of reference positions, as well as changes of the syringe type and tray type, must be performed by using the Control Terminal.

  • When using non-integer values in the PGM Wizard/Editor of the Open AS, the decimal separator must be a point (.) not a comma. To change the decimal symbol set the regional settings of your operating system to English (US/UK) under Start -> Control Panel -> Region and Language.

What is required?

License:

Timebase Class 1

Connection:

There are two possible types of communication between the Chromeleon server PC and the autosampler: Ethernet (LAN) or serial (RS-232) communication.

Ethernet (LAN): A free Ethernet port and the following cable are required:

Ethernet LAN cable

Serial: A free COM port and the following cable are required:

9-pin to 9-pin RS-232 cable (shipped with the autosampler)

Control Panel:

To control the instrument, use the Thermo_Accela_Open_Autosampler.pan from the
Dionex Templates\Panels\LC_Other
folder in the Browser.

Hardware Installation

Device Connection:

Ethernet (LAN) communication

  1. Connect the instrument to an Ethernet switch or hub using the Ethernet LAN cable shipped with the instrument.

  2. Configure the TCP/IP network settings. The default IP address for the Accela Open Autosampler is 172.16.1.200.

 Note:

If you are controlling more than one Accela Open Autosampler from the Chromeleon server PC, each Accela Open Autosampler must have a unique IP address. The IP address for the Accela Open Autosampler is 172.16.x.200, where x (the third byte) is a unique integer value for each autosampler connected to the server PC. For information how to define the IP address of the autosampler, see below under "Device Settings".

For information about how to setup the TCP/IP connection, also refer to  TCP/IP (LAN) and the related subtopics.

Serial communication

Connect the SER1 port on the autosampler's rear panel to a free COM port on the Chromeleon server PC, using the RS-232 cable shipped with the autosampler.

Device Settings:

If required, communication settings for the autosampler can be changed by using the Accela Open Autosampler Control Terminal.

To set the communication protocol

Switch the autosampler from Ethernet (LAN) to serial (RS-232) communication or vice versa, if required. The current setting (SER or LAN) is shown during boot-up.

  1. On the Job Queue screen, select Menu by pressing the F1 key.

  2. From the Menu screen, rotate the outer knob to move the cursor bar (highlight) to Setup.

  3. Press F3 to access the extended user level options.

  4. Press the Enter button to select Setup.

  5. Rotate the outer knob to move the cursor bar (highlight) to Communication.

  6. Press the Enter button to select Communication. The Communication screen appears with the Comm Port row selected.

  7. Press the Enter button to select CommPort. Rotate the outer knob to select one of the following:

    • To specify serial communication, select SER1.

    • To specify Ethernet communication, select LAN.

  8. Press the Enter button to confirm your selection.

To set the IP address, subnet masks, or gateway address

Depending on the LAN environment and number of autosamplers used, you many want to change the IP address or related settings.

  1. Go to the Communication menu as described above.

  2. Do one or more of the following:

    • Set the IP address under IpAddr1 to IpAddr4.

    • Set the subnet mask under SubNet1 to Subnet4.

    • Set the gateway address under StdGateway1 to StdGateway4.

For detailed information how to use the Control Terminal, refer to the Accela Open Autosampler hardware manual.

Hardware Synchronization:

For a description of how to use the autosampler with inject response signal synchronization in an Accela system, refer to Thermo Scientific Accela System: Hardware Synchronization with Accela Open Autosampler.

Software Installation

  1. In the Chromeleon Server Configuration, add the Driver to a timebase. For details, see Adding, Configuring or Deleting Devices. After you add the driver to the timebase, the Configuration dialog or wizard opens automatically.

  2. Select if the autosampler is controlled by Chromeleon via a COM port (serial communication) or via an Ethernet connection.
