Installing and Controlling Thermo Scientific Devices
Thermo Scientific Surveyor Plus LC Pump

Device Type:

Quaternary low-pressure gradient pump with built-in degasser and pulse dampener.

Device Driver:

Thermo Scientific: Surveyor Plus Pump

The pump was tested with pump firmware version 2.0 and adapter firmware version 2.00.

Restrictions:

The following options are not supported:

  • Firmware download cannot be done via Chromeleon. Instead, use the Thermo Scientific download tool provided with the XcaliburTM or ChromQuest software.

  • Blank runs without injection

  • Programs with flow ramps or composition gradients, but without inject command

  • Only one pump is allowed per stack.

Note:

The driver does not support the following pump models:

  • Thermo Surveyor LC pumps

  • Thermo Surveyor MS pumps

What is required?

License:

Timebase Class 1

Device Connection:

A free Ethernet port and the following cable are required:

  • Ethernet LAN cable, which is shipped from Thermo Scientific with the pump

  • Dionex Synchronization Cable Surveyor Plus (Dionex part no.: 8914.0163) for controlling the Surveyor Plus pump via Chromeleon. Also refer to section Connecting the Synchronization Cable below.

Note:

The System Interconnect Cable supplied by Thermo Scientific for all Surveyor Plus modules is not required when running the system under Chromeleon control.

Disconnect the cable if attached to the system and verify that the Start and Stop inputs are not connected when running the Surveyor Plus system under Chromeleon control. Otherwise, Chromeleon will not be able to perform synchronization between modules.

Network Settings:

(Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems only)

For possible network settings that may be required, refer to Chromeleon and Windows Firewall, section  Network Configuration under Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Device Settings:

If necessary, use the rotary switches located on the rear panel to change the stack ID (and thus the IP address) of the pump:

The range of values is from 01–99. The default value is 01. The value 00 is reserved for special service settings.

After changing the rotary switch settings, the pump must be powered OFF and ON again to allow the changes to take effect.

Note:

When connecting more than one Surveyor Plus pump via Ethernet, make sure to configure each pump with a different stack ID.

For detailed information, refer to the hardware manual for the pump.

Connecting the Synchronization Cable:

The Dionex synchronization cable is an optional accessory that allows improved synchronization between the pump and the autosampler. The cable has three connectors for connecting the Surveyor Plus autosampler with the Surveyor Plus LC pump, and the COM port on the PC.

Connect the cable as follows:

  1. Plug the autosampler connector (marked "A/S") of the synchronization cable into the left-most 8-pin socket at the rear panel of the autosampler.

  2. Plug the pump connector (marked "Pump") of the synchronization cable into the left-most 8-pin socket at the rear panel of the Surveyor Plus LC pump (see figure below).

  3. Attach the 9-pin D-Sub (female) connector of the synchronization cable into the serial port of the PC. If the PC does not provide a serial port, use a serial interface card (Meilhaus) instead. For more information about Meilhaus cards available from Thermo Scientific Dionex , refer to Installing the Serial RS-232 Interface Card (Meilhaus).

    Note:

Connection via UCI COM port is not possible.

Control Panel:

To control the instrument, use the Thermo Surveyor_Plus_Pump.pan from the Dionex Templates\Panels\LC_Other folder in the Browser.

Hardware Installation

Device Connection:

  1. Connect the pump to an Ethernet switch or hub using the Ethernet LAN cable shipped with the instrument.

  1. Configure the TCP/IP network settings: Enter the Subnet Mask (255.255.0.0) and IP address (172.16.yy.zz)  to be used. Note that the addresses 172.16.0.0 and 172.16.255.255 are reserved for special purposes and therefore cannot be used.

For information about how to setup the TCP/IP connection, also refer to  Connecting Devices via TCP/IP (LAN) and the related subtopics.

Device Settings:

If necessary, use the rotary switches located on the rear panel to change the IP address of the device. For detailed information, refer to the hardware manual for the pump.

Software Installation

  1. In the Chromeleon Server Configuration, add the Driver to a timebase. For details, see Adding, Configuring or Deleting Devices. After you add the driver to the timebase, the Configuration dialog or wizard opens automatically.

  2. On the Pump Configuration page specify the following settings:

Configuration Settings to Operate the Pump with a Thermo Surveyor Plus Autosampler

To operate the pump with a Thermo Surveyor Plus autosampler, select the following check boxes on the Signals tab page of the Surveyor Plus autosampler configuration:

Tip:

The only supported configuration is a Surveyor Plus pump in combination with a Surveyor Plus AS. It is not possible to control either module alone, or in combination with Accela modules.
