Installing and Controlling Third-Party Devices
Merck Hitachi L6200/L6210 and L6250 Pumps: Installation

Hardware Installation

Device Connection:

Use a special RS-232 cable (see  Merck Hitachi Cable) to connect the Merck Hitachi pumps.

Device Settings:

Set the switch on the instrument's rear panel to the Remote position. In addition, verify that switch 1 on the horizontal card inside the instrument has the following settings:

Switch 1    1    2     3    4     5     6

Off  On  On  On  Off  Off

Set the pump's operating mode on the device. Press the PUMP MODE key and select the corresponding number (see below) for the available hardware. Confirm your input by pressing <Enter>.

1 - Manual Operation

2 - LOW-GR (Low Pressure Gradient) The gradient accessories from Merck Hitachi, part number: 18111, are required for this option.

3 - HIGH-GR (High Pressure Gradient) The gradient accessories from Merck Hitachi, part number: 18112 (binary) or 18113 (ternary) and the corresponding number of L6000 pumps are required.

 Tip:

For high gradient pressure operation, connect an L6000 pump (slave pump) to the Hitachi I/O bus. Please note that Chromeleon cannot check this.

4 - COLUMN PACK

It is not possible to control the flow in Manual Operation mode. Therefore, select LOW-GR operating mode, if necessary. Ignore the CHECK PERIPHERALS by pressing CLEAR.

Software Installation

Install the Device Driver in the Chromeleon Server Configuration. (For more information about the program, refer to Software Installation and Communication  The Server Configuration Program.)

  1. Start the Chromeleon server.

  2. Start the Server Configuration program.

  3. Add the pump to the selected timebase. Select Add Device on the Edit or context menu, and then select Hitachi (or Merck) from the Manufacturers list box and L6200/L6210 Pump (or L6250 Pump) from the Devices list box.

  4. The following settings are required:

On the General tab page, select the COM port to which the pump is connected. In addition, disable the Demo Mode.

On the Limits tab page, specify your pump type and determine the maximum permissible pressure.

 Tip:

If the system includes a Merck Hitachi L6210 pump (an inert pump), you must set the pressure limit to 145 bar (14.5 MPa = 2102.5 psi) in the Server Configuration. Otherwise, the pump ignores all flow commands. The maximum pressure of the L6200 pump is 400 bar (40 MPa = 5800 psi). For optimum performance of the L6250 pump, set the upper pressure limit to 147 bar (14.7 MPa = 2131.5 psi).

On the Solvents tab page, specify the number and name(s) of the solvents delivered by the pump.

The Error Levels tab page classifies the severity of any errors that occur. It is generally not necessary to change the default settings.

Application

For an example program for the Merck Hitachi L6200 Pump, refer to Commands and Tips for Third-Party Devices  Merck Hitachi Pumps: Program Example.
