Hardware
Prerequisites:

A free RS-232 port.

 Tip:

Firmware version 2.60 or higher is required to control the Jasco 980 pump. Firmware version 2.15 or higher is required to control the Jasco 1580 pump.

Control Panel:

Jasco980.pan

Hardware Installation

Device Connection:

Use a special RS-232 cable (see  Jasco Cable) to connect the Jasco pumps. In addition, installation of an RS-232 module in the pump is required.

Device Settings:

On the serial interface control card of the Jasco pump (directly on the 25-pin serial female connector), set the jumpers as described below. (The factory default setting is often different.)

If the jumper settings are different, serial control is not possible. After the physical connection has been established, install and configure the pump in the Server Configuration program.

Interface parameters: 4800 baud; 8 data bits; no parity; 2 stop bits; handshake XON.

 Tip:

The pump can be operated as either a high-pressure or low-pressure gradient pump. To select the mode of operation, press SHIFT 5 on the pump keypad.

Restrictions:

For the LPG 1580, Chromeleon only supports the control of three solvents.

Software Installation

Install the Device Driver in the Chromeleon Server Configuration. (For more information about the program, refer to Software Installation and Communication  The Server Configuration Program.)

  1. Start the Chromeleon server.

  2. Start the Server Configuration program.

  3. Add the pump to the timebase. Select Add Device on the Edit or context menu, and then select Jasco from the Manufacturers list box and 980/1580 Pump from the Devices list box.

  4. The following settings are required:

On the General tab page, select the COM port to which the pump is connected. In addition, disable the Demo Mode.

On the Head Type & Limits tab page, specify the pump type and determine the allowed maximum pressure.

On the Solvents tab page, specify the number and name(s) of the solvents delivered by the pump.

The Error Levels tab page classifies the severity of any errors that occur. It is generally not necessary to change the default settings.

  1. To control the Jasco 980 or 1580 pump, connect the Jasco980.pan Control Panel in the Chromeleon client to the corresponding timebase.

Application

The Jasco 980 pump is suitable for Low-Pressure Gradients (LPG) and High-Pressure Gradients (HPG):

LPG: Chromeleon controls the pump. The pump controls the solvent mixer, which is connected to the pump's Low Pressure Grad output.

HPG: Chromeleon controls pump no. 1. This pump controls additional pumps via LC-Net connections.

 Notes:

Due to the slow communication between Chromeleon and the pump, the execution of the flow command is delayed for several seconds. However, a suitable program can compensate this.

If the pressure reading is below the lower pressure limit, the pump will not be turned off for approximately two minutes because the tolerance time of the pump is correspondingly long.

Further Information

 Tip:

For more installation details, refer to the manual for the instrument.
