Connection:

Required components:

  • For each device (pump or autosampler): one free RS-232 port on the PC

  • Null modem cable (Thermo Scientific part no.: 8914.0103A (25-pin to 9-pin) or 8914.0129 (9-pin to 9-pin); for more information, refer to  Null Modem Cable (RS-232) in the Appendix of the Hardware Installation section

  • In addition for the UV detector: GPIB IEEE 488 bus cable (Thermo Scientific part no.: 5919.0013); for more information, refer to  GPIB IEEE 488 Bus Cable.

Hardware
Prerequisites:

For the UV detector: NI GPIB interface card (Thermo Scientific part no. 5919.0012) or Agilent GPIB/USB adapter

Software
Prerequisites:

For the UV detector: VISA library

Pump:

Communication Interface Board (CIB Board) (necessary to control the pump)

Control Panel:

HP1050S.pan

Hardware Installation

Device Connection:

Use one  Null Modem Cable each to connect the autosampler and/or pump. Connect an RS-232 port on the PC with the RS-232 port on the CIB board of the pump or autosampler.

To connect the UV detector to the GPIB card, use a  GPIB IEEE 488 Bus Cable.

 Caution:

When connecting several devices via GPIB, connect them in series (not in a star structure) and turn on all devices. Otherwise, communication problems may occur.

Device Settings:

After turning on the instrument and completing the initialization procedure, follow the steps described in the Agilent Operating Instructions to enter these device settings:

  • Press <CTRL>: Date & Time appears.

  • Press <NEXT>: Configuration appears.

  • Press <ENTER>.

  • Press <NEXT> until Communication appears.

  • Press <ENTER>: Interface appears.

  • Press <RIGHT>.

  • Press <NEXT> until Serial appears.

  • Press <ENTER>.

  • Press <NEXT> until Serial Mode appears.

  • Press <RIGHT>.

  • Press <NEXT> until A appears. (This sets the communication parameters as follows: 7 Data Bits, Even Parity, and 2 Stop Bits.)

  • Press <ENTER>.

  • After <NEXT>, Baud rate: 9600 appears.

  • Press <NEXT> and select XON/XOFF: Off (disabled).

To be able to execute flow ramps with the HP 1050 gradient pump, verify that the Remote Mode is set to Local:

  • Press <CTRL>: Date & Time appears.

  • Press <NEXT>: Configuration appears.

  • Press <ENTER>.

  • Press <NEXT> until Remote appears.

  • Press <RIGHT>.

  • Press <NEXT> until Local appears.

  • Press <Enter>.

Restrictions:

To ensure smooth handling of sample injections, allow at least 2 minutes between injections. This is checked with the ReadyCheck of each program; if less than 2 minutes has elapsed, an error message is displayed.

To avoid errors, verify that the HP 1050 HPLC System is connected only to the PC and not to other Agilent devices.

Software Installation

Install the Device Drivers for the Agilent (or HP) 1050 HPLC System in the Chromeleon Server Configuration. (For more information about the program, refer to Software Installation and Communication  The Server Configuration Program.)

  1. Start the Chromeleon server.

  2. Start the Server Configuration program.

  3. Add the HP 1050 Gradient pump to the timebase. Select Add Device on the Edit or context menu, and then select Agilent (or HP) from the Manufacturers list box and 1050 Gradient Pump from the Devices list box.

  4. The following settings are required:

On the General tab page, select a free COM port.

On the Solvents tab page, specify the number and names of the eluents that are delivered by the pump.

On the Relays tab page, check a box to enable or disable the corresponding relay.

The Error Levels tab page classifies the severity of any errors that occur. It is generally not necessary to change the default settings.

  1. Follow step 3 above to add the Agilent (or HP) 1050 Autosampler to the same timebase.

  2. The following settings are required:

On the General tab page, select a free COM port.

On the Rack tab page, select the check box of the used rack.

On the Relays tab page, check a box to enable or disable the corresponding relay.

The Error Levels tab page classifies the severity of any errors that occur. It is generally not necessary to change the default settings.

  1. In addition, add the Agilent (or HP) 1050 UV VWD Detector to the timebase.

  2. The following settings are required:

On the General tab page, select a free COM port.

On the Signals tab page, accept the enabled channel unless you do not want to record a signal.

The Error Levels tab page classifies the severity of any errors that occur. It is generally not necessary to change the default settings.

  1. To control the HP 1050 HPLC system connect the HP1050S.pan Control Panel in the Chromeleon client to the corresponding timebase.

Application

Nothing particular known.

The User Help section provides information about the different commands that the UV detector of the 1050 HPLC System supports; refer to Commands and Tips for Third-Party Devices  Agilent 1050 HPLC System: UV Detector.

Troubleshooting

If errors occur during operation, check whether a START/STOP event cable is installed. Remove the cable.

Also, refer to Commands and Tips for Third-Party Devices  GPIB-Connected Devices: Troubleshooting in the User Help section.

Further Information

 Note:

The Thermo Scientific device drivers for HP 1050 HPLC System have been tested successfully with the following firmware versions:
HP 1050 GP rev 3.2 and HP 1050 S rev 4.2.

If you have problems with firmware versions lower than the ones indicated, a firmware update might help.

 Tip:

For more installation details, refer to the manual for the instrument.

For an overview of the different Agilent/HP instruments for which device drivers are available in Chromeleon, refer to  Agilent (formerly HP).
