Controlling the Eluent Generator Concentration

The eluent concentration generated by the Eluent Generator can be set manually or controlled via a Program. The allowable eluent concentration depends on several factors, including the flow rate, suppressor type, eluent generator cartridge type, and cartridge configuration (in systems that support dual-cartridge configurations). See How to: IC Control  Maximum Concentration Ranges for Eluent Generators for details.

To determine the eluent concentration required for your application, refer to the column manual. Dionex column manuals are included on the Dionex Reference Library CD-ROM.

Manually Setting the Eluent Generator Concentration

  1. Open the control panel for the Timebase; see How to: Controlling Devices from the Control Panel  Opening a Control Panel.

  2. Enter the value into the Concentration edit field. Note: On some control panels, the field is labeled Target Concentration.

  3. Alternatively, select Command on the Control menu to open the Commands dialog box. Under EluentGenerator, select the Concentration command, and enter the value.

The Applied Concentration field on the control panel displays the concentration of eluent currently being generated. When the eluent generator is on, the Applied Concentration and the Target Concentration are typically equal, except in these situations:

For carbonate/bicarbonate eluent:
Applied Concentration K
2CO3 = Target Concentration K2CO3 + Target Concentration Electrolytic pH Modifier

Programming the Eluent Generator Concentration

Commands for setting the eluent concentration can be added to a program (see Control  The Control Program).

You can use the  Program Wizard to enter the concentration command(s). With the wizard, you can enter a single concentration value for the entire analysis or program a ramp or multi-step gradient in which the generated concentration of eluent changes over time. When completing the wizard, click the Help button on the EluentGenerator Options tab page to display details about the eluent generator and gradient options.

 Note:

The ICS-2000/ICS-2100 Gradient Generation license is required in order to create eluent gradients with either the ICS-2000 or ICS-2100.
