Installing and Controlling Third-Party Devices
Varian SD-1, SD-200/SD-300, ProStar 210/215, and PrepStar 218 Pumps: Installation

Device Type:

Pump

Device Driver:

Rainin (or Varian): SD-1-Pump or
Rainin
(or Varian): SD-200/SD-300-Pump
(Use the SD-200/SD-300-Pump driver also for the ProStar 210/215 and PrepStar 218 Pumps.)

Supported Hardware Options:

No special options available.

What is required?

License:

Timebase Class 3

Connection:

GSIOC RS-232 adapter cable 605. For more information, refer to  Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 Adapter Cable in the Appendix of the Hardware Installation section. The part number for the Gilson adapter cable is 360784192. The cable is not available from Dionex.

Hardware
Prerequisites:

  • A multi-serial 8-fold PCI interface card (8-RS-232 Multi-COM card, Dionex part no. 5906.2095)

  • A free RS-232 port on the Multi-COM card. (Note: Connection via other RS-232 ports, e.g., the COM port of the UCI, is not possible.)

Control Panel:

GIL306Gradient.pan

Hardware Installation

Device Connection:

The device driver supports up to 3 SD-1, SD-200/300, ProStar 210/215, or PrepStar 218 pumps. The Varian pumps use the same kind of GSIOC bus as the Gilson 302 and 303 pumps (see  Gilson: 302 and 303 Pumps). Therefore, an RS-232/GSIOC adapter, such as the Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 adapter cable, is required to connect the PC to the first pump. (For more information about this adapter cable, refer to  Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 Adapter Cable in the Appendix of the Hardware Installation section. The part number for the Gilson adapter cable is 360784192. The cable is not available from Dionex.)

 Tips:

The adapter is shipped with a default baud rate of 19200. Therefore, to operate the SD-200/SD-300, ProStar 210/215, or PrepStar 218 pumps by Chromeleon, set the baud rate to 9600 (see the settings on the General tab page). Open the connector housing and resolder the cable from pad A to pad B. (For more information, refer to 605 RS-232 Adapter and GSIOC Protocol - USER's GUIDE.)

Contrary to the other Varian pumps the SD-1 driver communicates at a baud rate of 19200. Therefore, do not modify 605 cable when using the SD-1 pump!

Support is not available for controlling the pumps via the RS-232 interfaces on the PC (COM ports) or the UCI Universal Chromatography Interface. The power supply of the GSIOC adapter (type 605) is directly via the RS-232 interface. However, the RS-232 ports on the UCI Universal Chromatography Interface are not designed for this. Connect the adapter to the multi-serial 8-fold PCI interface card (8-RS-232 Multi-COM card, Dionex part no. 5906.2095,) instead.

If several pumps are used in a high-pressure gradient system, the second pump can be connected to the first one with a GSIOC cable and the third pump can be connected to the second.

Device Settings:

Each pump has its own GSIOC address (0 to 63). The address is set on a DIP switch. This switch is located inside the pump on the back of the front panel.

Software Installation

Install the Device Driver in the Chromeleon Server Configuration. (For more information about the program, refer to Software Installation and Communication  The Server Configuration Program.)

  1. Start the Chromeleon server.

  2. Start the Server Configuration program.

  3. Add the pump to the selected timebase. Select Add Device on the Edit or context menu, and then select Rainin (or Varian) from the Manufacturers list box and SD-1 Pump (or SD-200/SD-300 Pump) from the Devices list box.

  4. The following settings are required:

On the General tab page, select a free COM port and enter the GSIOC address.

On the GSIOC and Head Types tab page, define the GSIOC addresses for the pump as well as the pump head types that are used.

The Error Levels tab page classifies the severity of any errors that occur. It is generally not necessary to change the default settings.

  1. To control the pump, connect the GIL306Gradient.pan Control Panel or any especially developed control panel in the Chromeleon client to the corresponding timebase.

Application

Nothing particular known.
