Gilson 305/306/307 Pumps: Installation

Device Type:

Pumps

Device Driver:

Gilson: 302 Pump

Supported Hardware Options:

Up to three Gilson 302/303 pumps

What is required?

License:

Timebase Class 3

Select About Chromeleon on the Help menu of the Chromeleon client to check whether this license class is available.

Connection:

Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 adapter cable. (For more information, refer to  Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 Adapter Cable. The Gilson part number for the adapter cable is 360784192. The cable is not available from Thermo Fisher Scientific.)

Hardware
Prerequisites:

  • A multi-serial, 8-fold PCI interface card (8-RS-232 Multi-Com card, Thermo Scientific part no. 5906.2095)

  • A free RS-232 port on the Multi-COM card. (Note: Connection via other RS-232 ports, e.g., the COM port of the UCI, is not possible.)

Control Panel:

GIL306Gradient.pan

Hardware Installation

Device Connection:

The device driver supports up to three Gilson 305/306/307 Pumps. The pumps are connected to the GSIOC bus on the GSIOC from Controller port. Connect the bus to the serial PC port using the original Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 adapter cable. (For more information, refer to  Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 Adapter Cable. The Gilson part number for the adapter cable is 360784192. The cable is not available from Thermo Fisher Scientific.)

 Tip:

Support is not available for controlling the Gilson 305/306/307 pumps via the RS-232 interfaces on the PC (COM ports) or on the UCI Universal Chromatography Interface. Always connect the Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 adapter cable to a multi-serial 8-fold PCI interface card (8-RS-232 Multi-COM card, Thermo Scientific part no. 5906.2095) instead

Device Settings:

Each pump must have a unique GSIOC address assigned. Enter this address on the instrument and in the Chromeleon Server Configuration Program.

On the 305 and 307 pumps, enter the address as follows:

  • Press <Menu>.

  • Press <I/O>.

  • Press <Next> until GSIOC Unit ID: appears.

  • Enter the ID and press <Enter>.

  • Press <Quit>.

For the 306 pump, the ID is set via a DIP switch on the instrument's rear panel (the switches 1-6 correspond to 1-bit 0, 2-bit 1, etc.). Use switches 7 and 8 to set the baud rate (9600 baud = 7/off and 8/on; 19200 baud = 7/on and 8/off).

Software Installation

Install the Device Driver in the Chromeleon Server Configuration. (For more information about the program, refer to Software Installation and Communication  The Server Configuration Program.)

  1. Start the Chromeleon server.

  2. Start the Server Configuration program.

  3. Add the pump to the timebase. Select Add Device on the Edit or context menu, and then select Gilson from the Manufacturers list box and 305/306/307 Pump from the Devices list box.

  4. The following settings are required:

On the General tab page, select a free COM port.

On the GSIOC and Head Types tab page, define the GSIOC addresses for the Gilson pump(s) as well as the pump head types that are used.

The Error Levels tab page classifies the severity of any errors that occur. It is generally not necessary to change the default settings.

  1. To control the installed Gilson pump, connect the GIL306Gradient.pan Control Panel or any especially developed control panel in the Chromeleon client to the corresponding timebase.

Application

Set the following communications parameters: 9600 Baud, 8 Bit, 2 Stop, Even Parity, and no Handshake. Use these parameters also when forming gradients or operating two or three pumps. All pumps must be connected to the same GSIOC bus. It is not possible to establish a master/slave connection on the GSIOC to Slave Pump connector (model 305)!

Chromeleon performs pressure monitoring. Therefore, do not enter pressure limits on these pumps! If the pressure is below the lower limit, the pump will stop after 60 seconds. The Refill Time and Compressibility pump parameters are also supported.
