Installing and Controlling Thermo Scientific Devices
Thermo Scientific Surveyor Plus PDA Detector

Device Type:

Photodiode Array Detector

Device Driver:

Thermo Scientific: Surveyor Plus PDA

Hardware Options
Supported:

Digital data acquisition for up to 3 channels.

Note:

The "Thermo Surveyor PDA" model is not supported by the Thermo Surveyor Plus PDA driver.

Restrictions:

  • Support for scanning, i.e., single spectra acquisition, is not available (however, continuous scanning of 3D fields is supported).

  • Only two Photodiode Array Detectors are permitted on one server PC.

  • Only one PDA detector is permitted per timebase.

  • You cannot change acquisition parameters (for example, wavelength, 3D field, or data range) while data acquisition is running.

  • Chromeleon currently does not support the wavelength calibration and dark current functions.

  • The Program Wizard provides only standard PDA templates for creating PGM files.

  • No PGM Editor support

What is required?

License:

Timebase Class 1
3D Data Acquisition

Connection:

A free Ethernet port and the following cable are required:

  • Ethernet LAN cable, which is shipped from Thermo Scientific with the detector

-or-

  • standard crossover cable to connect the detector directly to the server PC

Note:

The System Interconnect Cable supplied by Thermo Scientific for all Surveyor Plus modules is not required when running the system under Chromeleon control.

Disconnect the cable if attached to the system and verify that the Start and Stop inputs are not connected when running the system under Chromeleon control. Otherwise, Chromeleon will not be able to perform synchronization between modules.

Network Settings:

(Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems only)

For possible network settings that may be required, refer to Chromeleon and Windows Firewall, section  Network Configuration under Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Control Panel:

The following panel is provided in the Dionex Templates\Panels\LC_Other folder in the Browser:

  • Thermo_Surveyor_Plus_PDA.pan

Hardware Installation

Device Connection:

  1. Connect the detector to an Ethernet switch or hub using the Ethernet LAN cable shipped with the instrument.

  2. Enter the Subnet Mask (255.255.0.0) and IP address (172.16.yy.zz) to be used. Note that the addresses 172.16.0.0 and 172.16.255.255 are reserved for special purposes and therefore cannot be used.

For information about how to setup the TCP/IP connection, also refer to  TCP/IP (LAN) and the related subtopics.

Device Settings:

If necessary, use the rotary switches located on the rear panel to change the module ID (and thus the IP address) of the detector:

The range of values is from 01–99. The default value is 01. The value 00 is reserved for special service settings.

After changing the rotary switch settings, the detector must be powered OFF and ON again.

Note:

When connecting more than one PDA detector via Ethernet, make sure to configure each detector with a different module ID.

For detailed information, refer to the hardware manual for the detector.

Software Installation

  1. In the Chromeleon Server Configuration, add the Driver to a timebase. For details, see Adding, Configuring or Deleting Devices. After you add the driver to the timebase, the Configuration dialog or wizard opens automatically.

  2. On the General tab page, in the IP box, specify the Ethernet address for the instrument. The IP address is in the format 172.16.x.162, whereby 'x' must correspond with the module ID value set by the rotary switches at the rear panel of the detector. If you need to change the switch settings, see instruction in section Device Settings above.

  3. On the remaining tab pages, specify settings as required.

For information about the settings on a page, click the Help button or press F1.

Further Information

For detailed installation instructions, refer to the operating instructions for the instrument.
