Tips: Support is not available for controlling the Gilson 116, 117, and 118 UV detectors via the RS-232 interfaces on the PC (COM ports) or on the UCI Universal Chromatography Interface. Always connect the Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 adapter cable to a multi-serial 8-fold PCI interface card (8-RS-232 Multi-COM card, Thermo Scientific part no. 5906.2095), instead. For more information about the Gilson adapter cable, refer to Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 adapter cable. The Gilson part number for this cable is 360784192. The cable is not available from Thermo Fisher Scientific. The Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 adapter cable is shipped with the baud rate set to 19200. To control the Gilson 116 to 119 detectors by Chromeleon, set the baud rate to 9600. Open the connector housing and resolder the cable from pad A to pad B. (For more information, refer to Gilson's 605 RS-232 Adapter and GSIOC Protocol - USER'S GUIDE.) |
Device Settings: |
Data transfer is performed at 9600 baud. Please check the baud rate setting on the detector. If necessary, change the setting to 9600 baud. You can change the setting when the instrument is in Setup editing mode. Press the <prep> key until Set Baud Rate appears on the display. Enter the correct value. You can also set the GSIOC address in this mode. Press the <prep> key until unit id code is displayed. Enter the GSIOC address. The default value is 16. The value entered here must correspond to the value in the Server Configuration (configuration of the Gilson UV Detector). |
Software Installation
Install the Device Driver in the Chromeleon Server Configuration. (For more information about the program, refer to Software Installation and Communication The Server Configuration Program.)
Start the Chromeleon server.
Start the Server Configuration program.
Add the detector to the timebase. Select Add Device on the Edit or context menu, and then select Gilson from the Manufacturers list box and 116 UV Detector (or 117/118 UV Detector or 119 UV Detector) from the Devices list box.
The following settings are required:
On the General tab page, select a free COM port on the interface card and enter the GSIOC address set on the instrument. (This address is displayed on the instrument's rear panel. To change the address, follow the description in Device Settings.)
Open the Signal Configuration dialog box by double-clicking the channel on the Signals tab page. Assign a channel to the signal and name the signal in the Signal Name field according to the selected detector type.
The Error Levels tab page classifies the severity of any errors that occur. It is generally not necessary to change the default settings.
To control the Gilson UV detectors, connect the GILUV117_118.pan control panel in the Chromeleon client to the corresponding timebase (if necessary, remove those components that are not required from the control panel).
Application
Tip:
With the Gilson 118 and 119 UV detectors, be sure to turn on the lamp before starting data acquisition. You can start data acquisition even when the lamp is turned off. You will not even receive an error message, as the instrument does not output the lamp status (On or Off).
Note:
For consistency reasons, the Peak Width and Sensitivity parameters (on the instrument) of UV detectors are called Response and Range in Chromeleon.
Further Information
Tip:
For more installation details, refer to the manual for the instrument.
For an overview of the different Gilson instruments for which device drivers are available in Chromeleon, refer to Gilson.
