Installing and Controlling Third-Party Devices
Gilson 201/202 Fraction Collectors: Installation

 Tip:

Thermo Fisher Scientific recommends installing the Gilson 202 Fraction Collector with the Gilson 202 Fraction Collector (ext.) driver. For more information, refer to  Gilson 202 Fraction Collector (Ext.)/204 Fraction Collector: Overview.

Device Type:

Fraction collector with up to 120 positions

Device Driver:

Gilson: 201/202 Fraction Collector

What is required?

License:

Timebase Class 3

Connection:

Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 adapter cable. (For more information, refer to  Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 Adapter Cable. The Gilson part number for the adapter cable is 360784192. The cable is not available from Thermo Fisher Scientific.)

Hardware
Prerequisites:

  • A multi-serial 8-fold PCI interface card (8-RS-232 Multi-COM card, Thermo Fisher Scientific part no. 5906.2095)

  • A free RS-232 port on the Multi-COM card. (Note: Connection via other RS-232 ports, e.g., the COM port of the UCI, is not possible.)

Control Panel:

GIL201.pan
Gilson202FC.pan

Hardware Installation

Device Connection:

Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 adapter cable. (For more information, refer to  Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 Adapter Cable in the Appendix of the Hardware Installation section. The Gilson part number for the adapter cable is 360784192. The cable is not available from Thermo Fisher Scientific.)

 Tips:

The Gilson 201/202 Fraction Collection device driver does not support control of the Gilson 201/202 fraction collectors via the RS-232 interfaces of the PC (COM ports) or the UCI Universal Chromatography Interface. Always connect the Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 adapter cable to a multi-serial 8-fold PCI interface card (8-RS-232 Multi-COM card, Thermo Fisher Scientific part no. 5906.2095) instead.

The Gilson 605 GSIOC RS-232 adapter cable is shipped with the baud rate set to 19200. To operate the Gilson 201/202 Fraction Collectors with the Gilson 201/202 Fraction Collector driver, set the baud rate to 9600. To do so, open the connector housing and resolder the cable from pad A to pad B. (For more information, refer to Gilson's 605 RS-232 Adapter and GSIOC Protocol - USER'S GUIDE.)

Device Settings:

Setting the Manual Mode and Defining the Rack Code

Define the program with the file number 1 as follows:

Display Press Key

 RESET

 FILE NUMBER .... DELETE

 WHICH NUMBER 1

 ENTER

Any existing program with the file number 1 will be deleted. This may take a few seconds. If this program does not exist, DOES NOT EXIST appears on the screen.

In both cases, press the following keys to create the new program 1. Select the currently used rack type as rack code, for example, 10.

Display  Press Key

 FILE NUMBER  1

 ENTER

 SELECT MODE  MAN.

 MANUAL MODE  ENTER

 RACK CODE   10

 RACK CODE  10 ENTER

 DELAY 0.00 ENTER

 READY-HIT ADV.

The READY-HIT ADV. display and the lighting MAN. LED indicate that the instrument is in manual mode and ready to operate.

On the Rack Type and Program File tab page in the Chromeleon Server Configuration, enter the File Number just defined on the instrument (here: 1) and the rack code. (For more information about the program, refer to Software Installation and Communication  The Server Configuration Program.)

Restrictions:

This device driver does not support control of the fraction collectors via a UCI Universal Chromatography Interface.

The following features of the Gilson 202 Fraction Collector are not supported:

  • Moving of the collect head directly to any absolute position of your choice

  • Moving of the collect head so that is does not cross other tubes

  • Recording of the signals of input channels

  • Control of the output channels of the Fraction Collector

These restrictions do not apply when the instrument is installed with the Gilson 202 Fraction Collector (ext.) device driver (see  Gilson 202 Fraction Collector (Ext.)/204 Fraction Collector: Installation). However, the restrictions described for the Gilson 202 Fraction Collector (Extended) driver do apply if the instrument was installed with the Gilson 201/202 Fraction Collector driver.

Software Installation

Install the Device Driver in the Chromeleon Server Configuration. (For more information about the program, refer to Software Installation and Communication  The Server Configuration Program.)

  1. Start the Chromeleon server.

  2. Start the Server Configuration program.

  3. Add the fraction collector to the timebase. Select Add Device on the Edit or context menu, and then select Gilson from the Manufacturers list box and 201/202 Fraction Collector from the Devices list box.

  4. The following settings are required:

On the General tab page, select a free COM port and enter the GSIOC address set on the instrument. (This address is displayed on the instrument's rear panel. To change the address, follow the above description in Device Settings.)

On the Rack Type and Program File tab page, enter the numbers of the rack types and files.

The Error Levels tab page classifies the severity of any errors that occur. It is generally not necessary to change the default settings.

  1. In addition, Thermo Fisher Scientific recommends that you install the Fraction Collection driver. You do not need to change the settings on the General and Error Levels tab pages.

  2. To control the Gilson 201 and 202 Fraction Collectors, connect the GIL201.pan or Gilson202FC.pan Control Panel in the Chromeleon client to the corresponding timebase.

Application

After you turned on the instrument, first the model name and then the number of the currently used program are displayed on the instrument screen; for example, FILE NUMBER 3.

 Tip:

The Connect command can only be performed in Chromeleon if the instrument is in Manual mode. The READY-HIT ADV. display and the lighting MAN. LED indicate that the instrument is currently in Manual mode and ready to operate. If this is not the case, the Gilson 201/202 program ... is not a manual program error message is logged in the Audit Trail. In this case, it is not possible to connect the instrument.
