What is required?

License:

Timebase Class 1

Connection:

A free COM port and the following cables are required:

  • RS-232 cable (Dionex part no. 8914.0132: 9-pin connector. For cable details, refer to  Merck Hitachi Cable.)

  • Signal cable (Dionex part no. 8911.5890, for cable details, refer to  HP 5890 Signal Cable).

Hardware
Prerequisites:

An A/D converter is required for data acquisition, for example, a UCI Universal Chromatography Interface (Dionex UI20, Dionex part no. 46017), or any other A/D converter that is supported by Chromeleon (e.g., PE Nelson Boxes) including the appropriate signal cables may be used.

Interface Card:

Combined HP-IB/RS-232 interface card (also called DICE, Agilent part no. 19257; includes card, back panel and flat ribbon cable)

Usually, the interface card is not installed in the GC. It has to be installed instead of the INET card.

Control Panels:

HP5890.pan or
HP5890 one Detector.pan

Hardware Installation

RS-232 Card
Installation:

  1. Turn off the GC and disconnect the unit from the mains.

  2. Remove the control panel on the right side of the GC to access the GC motherboard.

  3. If an INET card is installed, remove the INET card and install the DICE card (Agilent part no. 19257-60015).

  4. Install the back panel (Agilent part no. 19257-60020) in the small recess located on the rear panel of the GC.

  5. Connect the back panel with the DICE card using a flat ribbon cable (Agilent part no. 19257-60500).

RS Device Connection:

Connect the RS-232 cable (25-pin connector) to the HP RS-232 port on the instrument's rear panel, and then connect the 9-pin (or 25-pin) female connector to the serial PC COM port cable.

Analog Detector
Connection:

Connect the signal cable to the selected channel on the UCI Universal Chromatography Interface; for example, Signal 1 = Detector 1; Signal 2 = Detector 2. (For cable details, refer to  HP 5890 Signal Cable; Dionex part no. 8911.5890).

 Tip:

For each detector, a separate cable is required.

When the HP 5890 GC is used together with a 7673 autosampler, the two instruments are usually connected using an additional cable.

Remove this cable at both ends. Then Disable INET global mode:

  1. On the GC keypad, press CLEAR and then press the "." key. The following information appears on the display: CALIB AND TEST [0-9].

  2. Press 3 and then press ENTER. The message CONFIGURE NETWORK appears on the display.

  3. Press ENTER. The message GLOBAL ADDR: appears on the display, followed by numbers.

  4. Press OFF to change the setting to LOCAL ADDR:.

  5. Press CLEAR to exit the menu.

 Tip:

You can also use the Agilent GC autosampler of the 6890 series. For more information, refer to Autosampler Series 6890.

Software Installation

  1. In the Chromeleon Server Configuration, add the Driver to a timebase. For details, see Adding, Configuring or Deleting Devices. After you add the driver to the timebase, the Configuration dialog or wizard opens automatically.

 Tips:

  1. Select the desired settings on each Configuration tab page. For information about the settings on a page, click the Help button or press F1.

  2. To control the HP 5890 GC connect one of the following Control Panels in the Chromeleon client to the corresponding timebase: HP5890.pan or HP5890 one Detector.pan (in case of just one detector).
