Commands and Tips for Thermo Scientific Devices
Thermo Scientific TriPlus Samplers / ThermoQuest HS850/HS2000 Headspace Samplers: Specifying the Sample Volume

Changing the syringe type

Chromeleon supports three syringe types for the TriPlus samplers and HS850/HS2000 headspace samplers: 5.0 ml, 2.5 ml, and 1.0 ml. The installed type is read from the device upon connect, so it is not necessary to update the configuration after changing the syringe type. To change the syringe type:

  1. Disconnect the sampler in Chromeleon.

  2. Replace the syringe as described in the sampler manual.

  3. If the new syringe has a different volume, adapt the device configuration as necessary from the control module display. Refer to the respective sampler manual for details.

  4. Reconnect the sampler in Chromeleon.

  5. Verify that the device driver correctly recognized the syringe type. To do so, use the Syringe property. Have Chromeleon display the Log.Syringe value.

Changing the tray configuration (TriPlus samplers only)

To change the tray configuration proceed as follows:

  1. Disconnect the sampler in Chromeleon.

  2. Replace the tray as described in the operating manual of the sampler. The sampler automatically identifies a new tray type.

  3. Reconnect the sampler in Chromeleon.

The installed tray type is identified by the device upon connect, so it is not necessary to update the configuration after replacement of the tray.

Caution:

Before changing the syringe type or tray configuration always make sure that the current batch run is completed. Otherwise, the TriPlus sampler will abort a running batch upon disconnect of the device - even if the sampler is already idle.

Using sample enrichment

Chromeleon supports sample enrichment by the headspace sampler. Using the GC's cold trap, large sample volumes (i.e., injection volume > max. syringe volume) are injected in several load cycles.

In Chromeleon, specify the sample volume (Volume). The sample volume is considered the total injection volume (V). In addition, specify the number of enrichments (n) via LoadsPerInject. The load cycle volume (VL) is calculated using the formula

 Tips:

To inhibit enrichment, set LoadsPerInject to 1.

Set LoadsPerInject =0 to load the syringe only once. In this case, the volume per load equals the sample volume (TriPlus sampler only).

The load cycle volume must be a multiple of 10 µl (HS850/HS2000) or 100 µl (TriPlus sampler); if it is not, a warning appears. For example, if Volume = 10 ml and LoadsPerInject = 3 , the warning for the TriPlus sampler reads as follows:

[Warning] {Sampler} 10.0 ml is not a valid Volume value if LoadsPerInject=3, using 9.9 ml instead.

If you decide to inject anyway, Chromeleon will modify the total injection volume accordingly and an error message will be logged in the Audit Trail.

Also note that during an injection, the load cycle volume (VL) is recorded in the Audit trail (property InjectionVolume) which can be added to a report.
