Installing and Controlling Third-Party Devices
Waters 996 and 2996 PDA Detectors: Installation

Device Type:

Photodiode Array Detector

Device Driver:

Waters: 996/2996PDA

Hardware Options
Supported:

Required Firmware version: 2.3.

Detectors equipped with previous firmware versions are updated automatically upon connect with Chromeleon.

Restrictions:

  • Only two Photodiode Array Detectors are permitted on one server PC.

  • It is not possible to use the remote inputs when Chromeleon controls the detector.

  • The Waters 996 and 2996 PDA Detectors have to be completely initialized before you can start controlling these instruments.

  • This Waters device cannot connect to a NI-488.2 driver version 15.0 or later. You must use a NI-488.2 driver with software version ≤ v.14.0.

What is required?

Licenses:

Timebase Class 2
To allow acquisition of 3D data: 3D Data Acquisition

Connection:

The following cable is required:

GPIB cable (Thermo Scientific/Dionex part no.: 5919.0013; for more information refer to  GPIB IEEE 488 Bus Cable)

 Tip:

You cannot connect the Waters 996 and 2996 PDA Detectors to a UCI Universal Chromatography Interface because the UCI does not provide a GPIB connector.

Hardware
Prerequisites:

GPIB interface card or GPIB/USB adapter

 Tips:

  • The Waters BusLAC/ETM card cannot be used with Chromeleon.

  • Thermo Fisher Scientific recommends not to mix Waters devices and Agilent HP 1100 Systems on the same GPIB card.

  • Due to GPIB data rate limitations, only one Waters 996 PDA detector per Alliance system and GPIB bus is allowed

Software
Prerequisites:

VISA library (≤ version 14.0)

Control Panel:

Waters2690_996.pan

Hardware Installation

  1. First, install Chromeleon software, and then connect the instrument using the GPIB IEEE 488 bus cable from Dionex.

  2. Follow the description in the instrument's manual to set the GPIB number on the instrument's rear panel, using the Dip switches. Make sure that the new GPIB address has not yet been assigned to another instrument.

Notes:

When using a Waters 996 PDA detector with an Alliance HPLC system, make sure that:

When connecting several devices or systems via GPIB, connect them in series (not in a star structure) and turn all devices on. Otherwise, communication problems may occur.

Software Installation

For details about how to add timebases and device drivers to the Server Configuration, refer to Adding, Configuring or Deleting Devices. When you add a driver to the timebase, the configuration dialog or wizard opens automatically. For information about the settings, click the Help button on a page or press F1.
