Installing and Controlling Third-Party Devices
Shodex HPLC Refractive Index Detectors (RI-101, RI-102, and RI-104)

Device Type:

Single-channel refractive index detector

Device Driver:

Shodex: RI-101/102/104 RI Detector

Hardware Options
Supported:

RI-101: Analytical version

 Tip:

The Shodex RI-101 Refractive Index Detector is available from Dionex as part of the Summit HPLC series.

RI-102: Preparative version

RI-104: Semi-micro version

Restrictions:

With digital data acquisition, the maximum duration of an analysis (i.e., of a single sample) is limited to about 1,500 minutes (~25 hours). Runs which exceed this period are terminated with a communication timeout error.

For runs that take longer than 25 hours it is recommended to use analog data acquisition, for example, via an UCI-100 interface.

What is required?

License:

Timebase Class 1

Connection:

A free RS232 port and the following items are required:

Modem Cable (1:1 Cable) (part no.: 8914.0143)

Firmware Version:

Recommended firmware version: 1.10 or later.

Note:

With earlier firmware versions (1.09 and earlier), communication errors may occur if the refractive indexes exceed the maximum RI range (OVER) (indicated by the error message "A communication timeout occurred while waiting for device answer in TaskGetAquData").

A problem that occurs with older devices is that the correct firmware version cannot be communicated to the software. As a result, the device always displays 1.06 as firmware version even if a more current version is installed.

This problem also occurs if the following chip versions are installed:

  • U18 (main1): firmware version 1.22

  • U11 (ADDA): firmware version 1.10

With these chip versions installed, the actual firmware version is 1.09. However, the detector displays firmware version 1.06 on the startup screen and communicates this version to Chromeleon.

Control Panel:

To control the instrument, use the Dionex_LC/Shodex_RI101.pan from the Dionex Templates\Panels\LC_Other folder in the Browser.

Hardware Installation

Device Connection:

First, install Chromeleon software, and then connect the instrument to the RS232 port on the Chromeleon server PC.

Also refer to Connecting Devices via RS232.

Software Installation

For details about how to add timebases and device drivers to the Server Configuration, refer to Adding, Configuring or Deleting Devices. When you add a driver to the timebase, the configuration dialog or wizard opens automatically. For information about the settings, click the Help button on a page or press F1.

Further Information

For detailed installation instructions, refer to the operating instructions for the instrument.
