Shimadzu SPD-M10Avp/M20A PDA Detector: Installation

Device Type:

Photodiode Array Detector

Device Driver:

Shimadzu: SPD-M10Avp/M20A PDA Detector

Hardware Options Supported:

  • 3D field

  • Digital data acquisition for up to four channels

  • Control of the analog outputs of the D/A converter

  • Start of data acquisition using an external signal

 Tip:

The driver was tested with firmware version 3.3 for the SPD-M10Avp, and 1.05 and 1.08 for the SPD-M20A.

Restrictions:

  • Only one SPD-M10Avp detector can be controlled on one Server PC. (Not applicable for SPD-M20A.)

  • Calibration and maintenance procedures are not supported.

  • When the server is turned off, all device settings are reset to the default values. Therefore, make sure that your PGM files include all important detector and channel parameters.

What is required?

License:

  • Timebase Class 3

  • 3D Data Acquisition

Connections:

For the SPD-M10Avp:

  • SCSI cable (shipped with the detector)

For the SPD-M20A:

  • Ethernet cable (to connect the detector via a hub) or crossover cable (to connect the detector directly to the network card).

Hardware / Software Prerequisites:

For the SPD-M10Avp:

  • SCSI card; Shimadzu recommends using the following cards: Adaptec AHA 1522A/AHA 1522B (ISA Bus) or AHA 2940 Ultra (PCI)

  • SCSI card driver

  • SPD-M10Avp driver (SCSIInst.ini) from Shimadzu for use of the detector with the SCSI card (usually shipped with the device).

For information on the SCSI card and required software components, please contact Dionex Service.

For the SPD-M20A:

  • Ethernet card or hub.

 Caution:

Use the RS232C port on the SPD-M20A rear panel only for Shimadzu's maintenance procedures. It is not possible to control the detector via this port.

Control Panel:

Shimadzu_M20A_PDA

Hardware Installation

SPD-M10Avp:

  1. Install the SCSI card and the corresponding SCSI driver software on the PC.

  2. Use an SCSI cable to connect the SPD-M10Avp to the SCSI controller.

  3. Subsequently, install the SPD-M10Avp driver (SCSIInst.ini)from Shimadzu. The driver is required for use of the detector with the SCSI card.

  4. Turn on the detector first, and then restart the PC.

SPD-M20A:

The SPD-M20A is equipped with an integrated Ethernet adapter. The default IP-address is:

  • IP address: 192.168.200.98

To avoid communication problems, Dionex recommends connecting the SPD-M20A to an independent instrument LAN, not to the office LAN.

For information about how to connect the SPD-M20A via TCP/IP, refer to  TCP/IP (LAN) and the related subtopics.

Software Installation

For details about how to add timebases and device drivers to the Server Configuration, refer to Adding, Configuring or Deleting Devices. When you add a driver to the timebase, the configuration dialog or wizard opens automatically. For information about the settings, click the Help button on a page or press F1.

Device Settings

At first, control via the CBM-20A(lite) system controller has to be disabled for the SPD-M20A detector. This step is required to ensure that the PDA will not be listed in the group list of the CBM system.

Then specify the data acquisition settings. Data acquisition can either be started using an external signal or via Chromeleon (see instructions below).

Disable direct control of the SPD-M20A via the CBM-20A(lite)

To disable control of the PDA via the CBM-20A(lite), remove the PDA from the CBM's instrument group and assign the detector to a new group:

  1. Turn on the detector.

  2. Launch the Web browser on your PC.

  3. Enter the IP address of the detector in the address field of the browser, for example, if the detector's IP address is 192.168.200.98, enter "http://192.168.200.98" in the address field.

  4. When the Login screen is displayed, log in as administrator (User ID: "administrator", password: "pdaadmin").

  5. On the Administrator Settings screen, in the Group Name box in the System information section, specify a new group name for the detector.

  6. Click the Update button to enable your changes.

  7. Exit the Web browser and turn off the instrument.

  8. Then specify the settings for data acquisition:

Execute the steps described under "To start data acquisition using an external signal", if data acquisition is to be performed using an external signal.

    –or–

Execute the steps described under "To start data acquisition using Chromeleon", if data acquisition is to be performed using Chromeleon.

For further details, also refer to the "223-00950D Quick Guide for Connection of CBM-20A(lite) and SPD-M20A" and the instruction manual for the detector which are provided by Shimadzu.

To start data acquisition using an external signal

To start data acquisition using Chromeleon

To allow control via Chromeleon, perform the following steps:

Troubleshooting

To avoid connect errors between the server PC and the SPD M10Avp PDA detector:

 Tip:

As an alternative, you could check the BIOS messages that appear before the operating system is booted to find out whether the PC has recognized the SCSI Controller and the connected instrument.

For a list of all error messages that might appear in Chromeleon, refer to the Error Levels tab page in the Server Configuration program.

Further Information

For detailed installation instructions, refer to the operating instructions for the detector.
