Installing and Controlling Third-Party Devices
Pharmacia LKB SuperRac 2211 and SuperFrac Fraction Collectors: Installation

Hardware Installation

Device Connection:

Connecting Cable (for LKB2211 SuperRac)

The cable connects the Ext.Input-Output output of the LKB2211 SuperRac Fraction Collector with the output of the Dionex 16-relays card. The cable has a 25-pin Sub-D connector (15-pin Sub-D connector for the SuperFrac collector) and a 37-pin Sub-D-connector. (For more information about the pin assignments, see below.)

To actuate a control function, the corresponding control input is connected with the ground output (Pin #7) for approximately 1s. The only exception is the valve control input. Here, the solvent is directed to the waste tube as long as the valve control input is connected with the ground; that is, the valve has the status On. To avoid interferences, all TTL control inputs of the instrument must be connected with the +5V output using 3KOhm Pull Up resistors.

Establish the connection illustrated above for pin 9 must also for pins 10, 11, 12, 13, and 24 on the LKB connector.

Pin Assignment for LKB 2211 SuperRac

Refer to the table below for the pin assignment of the six relays that are used. Use the following pins of the LKB connector (25-pin Sub-D connector). For more information about the LKB connector, refer to the LKB 2211-010 SuperRac Instruction Manual.

Relay  Function LKB connector

 1 Return  9

 2 Step 10

 3 Return_Loop 11

 4 Start_Loop 12

 5 New_Loop 13

 6 Waste_Valve 24

 Tip:

Connect the corresponding GND connector for each function of the cable to the grounding connection of the LKB connector (pin 7).

Device Settings:

Initialization

After you have turned on the instrument or after a Reset, follow the description below to initialize the fraction collector:

  • Select the type of the used sample rack (type A to E).

  • Determine the fraction size. For operation by Chromeleon, select time control.

  • Determine the time interval. Normally, the time interval determines the duration that the fraction collector stays above a tube. When Chromeleon controls the fraction collector, Chromeleon determines the switching time to the next tube. Aherefore, make sure that the time interval exceeds the total analysis time.

  • Enter the number of fractions. Define the minimum number of collector tubes belonging to one fraction loop. Make sure that sufficient tubes are reserved for a sample.

For more information, refer to the LKB 2211-010 SuperRac Instruction Manual.

Restrictions:

No restrictions known.

Software Installation

Install the Device Driver in the Chromeleon Server Configuration. (For more information about the program, refer to Software Installation and Communication  The Server Configuration Program.)

  1. Start the Chromeleon server.

  2. Start the Server Configuration program.

  3. Add the fraction collector to the timebase. Select Add Device on the Edit or context menu, and then select LKB from the Manufacturers list box and Superrac 2211Fraction Collector from the Devices list box.

  4. The following settings are required:

On the General tab page, do not change the instrument's name: LKB2211.

On the Relays tab page, define the relays for controlling the six standard functions of the Pharmacia fraction collector.

The Error Levels tab page classifies the severity of any errors that occur. It is generally not necessary to change the default settings.

  1. To control the fraction collector, connect the LKB2211.pan Control Panel or any specially developed control panel in the Chromeleon client to the corresponding timebase.

Application

Assigning Control Functions

In the Server Configuration, assign the control functions to specific relays on the Relays tab page of the LKB Superrac 2211 Fraction Collector driver. The following functions are available:

Function:

Description:

Start_Loop

Starts a sample loop. Moves the fraction collector to the first collecting tube (tube 1) in the sample loop. The status of the fraction collector changes from Rdy to RUN.

Step

Moves the fraction collector to the next tube within the sample loop.

Return_Loop

Moves the fraction collector to the start position of the sample loop. The status of the fraction collector is Rdy.

Return

Moves the fraction collector to the start position of the sample loop 0. The status of the fraction collector is Rdy.

New_Loop

Moves the fraction collector to the next sample loop. The status of the fraction collector is Rdy.

Waste_Valve

This relay diverts the flow from the collection tubes to the waste tube.
