What is required?

Connection:

RS-232 cable. (For more information, refer to  Applied Biosystems ABI 785A Cable in the Appendix of the Hardware Installation section.)

Hardware
Prerequisites:

  • An A/D converter is required for data acquisition. A UCI Universal Chromatography Interface including the appropriate signal cables may be used.

  • A free RS-232 port is required for control.

Hardware Installation

Device Connection:

Connect the ABI 785A UV detector using an RS-232 cable (see  Applied Biosystems ABI 785A Cable in the Appendix of the Hardware Installation section)

Device Settings:

Make sure that the communications parameters are set as follows: 9600 Baud, 8 Data bits, No Parity, 1 Stop bit, No Handshake.

Set the correct baud rate on the instrument itself. From the instrument's startup display:

  • Press More (F4 key).

  • Press Util (F2 key).

  • Press More (F4 key).

  • Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the BAUD parameter.

  • Use the Prev. and Next keys to select the value 9600.

  • Press Done (F4 key).

  • Press Exit (F1 key).

This brings you back to the startup display.

 

Software Installation

Install the Device Driver in the Chromeleon Server Configuration. (For more information about the program, refer to Software Installation and Communication  The Server Configuration Program.)

  1. Start the Chromeleon server.

  2. Start the Server Configuration program.

  3. Add the detector to the timebase. Select Add Device on the Edit or context menu, and then select ABI from the Manufacturers list box and ABI_785A_UV_VIS_Detector from the Devices list box.

  4. The following settings are required:

On the ABI_785A_UV_VIS_Detector tab page, verify that the Demo Mode is disabled.

On the Generic tab page, select a free COM port.

The Error Levels tab page classifies the severity of any errors that occur. It is generally not necessary to change the default settings.

  1. To control the ABI 785A UV Detector, connect the Abi785A.pan Control Panel in the Chromeleon client to the corresponding timebase.

Application

Rise Time, Scan, and SetRelays are available as special parameters (however, Scan and SetRelays are not included in the ABI785A.PAN control panel).
